Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Dufferin & District has been creating friendships since 1972. The first local Big Brothers Agency was started that year together by Bill Bissell and Bill Parke. In 1977 the local Big Sisters Agency was started. The two agencies were merged in 1996. The agencies started out matching Big Brothers with Little Brothers and Big Sisters with Little Sisters but have grown to include a variety of different programs including the In-School Mentoring program, Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program, and Joining Paths.

The initial service that Big Brothers now provides across Lambton County began in 1966 as a support service for parents involved with the Social Service Bureau. One of the original founders of the Sarnia agency is Brother Al Verstraaten, who pursued affiliation with Big Brothers of Canada after realizing that in many ways they were providing the same service.

On April 23rd 1964 Big Brothers of Welland County was formed, serving the South Niagara area. Membership with the United Way in 1965 provided funding for the organization. The organization grew rapidly and within two years began to service the Peace Bridge area, and remained servicing the area for nineteen years. The agency has gone through three name changes in its history, reflecting organizational changes with our local United Way.

Giving them the venues to become more self assured individuals and have others to reach out to break their isolation factor.
