Bill Lishman is a Canadian artist, sculptor and inventor who was among the first Canadians to fly ultralight aircraft. He realized that the speed of Mr. Carrick's boat matched the speed of his aircraft and he thought that maybe he could take the concept one step further by actually flying with the geese.

Leaders in the community thought that a drop-in destination would be good for the City. The community welcomed the social and activity opportunities when the Branch opened in 1969 and it quickly flourished as a hot spot for older adults to enjoy dances, bingo, birthday and anniversary celebrations; in the first year, 1,000 people became members.
