Animal science students take courses in animal anatomy, physiology and biochemistry in order to learn the fundamentals. They then take courses in animal genetics, ecology, and reproduction, where they learn how the artificial breeding of animals affects their genetic makeup and their behaviors.
Advanced studies include that of animal health, veterinary and wildlife entomology, and avian production. Students can specialize in their area of chosen study (dairy, sheep, poultry, fish, pets, etc.) and take additional courses to familiarize themselves with the particulars of that segment of animal science.
Additional theory teaches students to maintain business records of an agricultural operation. They learn about the key economic principles to market and develop business plans. As well, they study environmental, business, and medical ethics.
A large part of the programs is hands-on. Students learn practical skills to manage the feeding and health of livestock while maintaining proper and safe handling of cattle, swine, poultry, and sheep. They learn to artificially inseminate cattle and assist with calving and lambing. Field trips are common where students get to watch and participate in a working farm or veterinary environments.
