Animal and Poultry Science Research Areas and Disciplines

A large part of animal science research is towards improving the breeding and genetics of agriculturally important animals. New techniques in artificial insemination and embryo transfer are being used to improve herd genetics. For instance, embryos from stud-quality females may be implanted into surrogate mothers to increase the number of offspring that may be produced by stud-quality animals, and there are studies underway to maximize the success rate of these surrogacies. These researchers are also working with medical doctors, biotechnologists, and laboratory scientists in order to translate these techniques to human infertility issues.

Nutrition-related research is also common. Studies are underway to adapt ruminant animals to use low-quality feed but result in high-quality energy for human consumption. This involves collaborations with geneticists, crop scientists, and microbiologists. As well, nutrient management systems are always being tweaked to ensure maximum efficiency, such as computer modeling and the recycling of manure.

Animal cloning has implications for human diseases, since these cloned animals can be used to contribute to advancing biomedical research into human ailments such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Several schools are currently attempting (or refining) their cloning techniques so as to have genetically identical specimens for research purposes. For example, McGill University has recently produced cloned pigs. Since pigs are physiologically similar to humans, these cloned pigs can be used as human analogies.

Given that cattle are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, studies are underway to attempt to minimize these. For example, researchers are attempting to breed cattle that contain less methane-producing bacteria in their guts, reducing methane production.

Disease control is another area of research. Since farm animals usually live in crowded conditions or are genetically similar, disease can spread quickly and decimate a population. As well, some animal diseases are zoonotic and have implications for human epidemiology (eg. swine flu, avian flu). Studies are underway to understand how these diseases are propagated, how they migrate from species to species, and how to mitigate these diseases
