People with a background in animal science can work in a variety of places. They can work on a farm as an assistant or manager, or as a livestock support technician. There they can work with veterinarians or collect data on feed, environmental conditions, or herd health.
Graduates can also work in the pharmaceutical industry, where they can work in feed sales or customer service representatives. They can also work in the laboratory developing new types of feed or working with toxicologists and microbiologists to develop new drugs for both livestock and human trials.
Animal scientists can also work in academia, teaching animal biology or veterinary science. They can also perform pure research while teaching. As well, animal scientists can work in hospitals or animal hospitals with pharmacologists or veterinarians.
Zoos and wildlife centers also employ animal scientists. These people work directly with wild, exotic, and rare animals in breeding programs, or work with conservationists in catch-and-release tagging programs. These people do a lot of fieldwork in a variety of environments: forests, lakes, polar regions, and alpine regions.
A degree in animal science can also be used as a stepping-stone for a career in veterinary science, law, biomedical engineering, or medicine.
