Sports Science Research Areas and Disciplines |
A lot of research in sport and exercise studies revolves around improving training regimes and coaching strategies for athletes. For example, researchers are developing body sensors to measure physiological outputs such as heart rate and respiration, , sleep and eye-tracking sensors, and pressure and force plate sensors for a variety of sports and rehabilitation applications (eg. learning to walk, the biomechanics of sprinting, etc). They are also developing testing labs for these measurements to take place. These chambers can test athletes in varied environments and provide fitness, health, and activity testing for local school and community sport events.
Other researchers are working with those in the textile industry to create athletic clothing. This includes quick-drying materials, materials that move with the body, UV-resistant materials, and special bodysuits for increased performance (eg. swimming, sprinting, etc).
Also see the articles on kinesiology, biomechanics, nutritional science, and physical therapy for more information on related research.
