Environmental engineers are involved in a variety of research. They are involved in pollution prevention and mitigation, where they are developing techniques such as scrubbers for heavy industry to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being emitted into the air. As well, investigations into using engineered microbes for pollution remediation at mine sites is also ongoing. This research is usually in conjunction with microbiologists, chemists, and mining engineers.
As well, improvements in the design of water and wastewater treatment facilities are also underway. The treatment and reusing of wastewater as gray water in office buildings is becoming more common, and ways to reduce the amount of water being used by cities is also being investigated.
Automobile pollution reduction is another hot topic of research, where environmental engineers are working together with the automobile industry to reduce tailpipe emissions, develop cleaner energy sources such as hydrogen, and create more efficient hybrid vehicles.
