What is Cardiac Surgery?Cardiac surgery is a type of surgery on the heart and associated vessels. It is frequently done to treat complications of heart disease, correct congenital heart defects, or during heart transplantation. It is different from thoracic surgery, which focuses more on surgeries of the other organs of the thoracic area (eg. lungs), although in the USA both disciplines are usually grouped together as cardiothoracic surgery.
