Cardiac Surgery Research Areas and Disciplines |
Research in cardiac surgery can either be basic scientific research, or clinical trials. Current research includes blood conservation during surgery, the biochemical basis of myocardial infarction, appropriate drugs during and after heart transplantation surgery, reasons for transplantation rejection and how to mitigate them, and neurological complications from cardiac surgery.
New cardiac surgical techniques are also being researched on a regular basis. Open heart surgery is being replaced with beating-heart surgery and minimally-invasive (robotic) surgery, both of which have shown success in decreasing patient recovery time post-surgery.
There is also research into developing new and improved drug regimes for patients post-surgery, both anti-rejection drugs and also those to promote faster recovery.
Current research, in collaboration with biomechanical engineers, also looks at designing and improving upon artificial hearts and heart-lung machines. New materials and engineering specifications are being re-evaluated to make them perform more efficiently and with less maintenance.
