Students begin with a background in cardiology and surgery (see articles cardiology and surgery), and then take advanced courses in cardiac surgery. This includes surgical anatomy of the heart and cardiophysiology.
Practical experience includes basic operating techniques such as skin closure, assisted ventilation, cardiac catheterization, and the use of the intra-aortic balloon pump. More advanced techniques such as valve repair and replacement, bypass surgery, heart and lung transplantation, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, congenital defects in both adults and children, and repair of aneurysms are taught.
Students are also taught how to use a heart-lung machine (for cardiopulmonary bypass) which is an important piece of equipment during all cardiac surgeries. Robotic assisted surgical techniques are also taught as robotics are becoming more prevalent in the operating room.
Also, students get experience in the assessment of patients referred for cardiac surgery. Students have the opportunity to examine patients in the clinic, and patients' histories can be reviewed with staff surgeons.
