What services does your organization provide?
Through our volunteers and staff, the York-Durham Aphasia Centre supports adults with communication disabilities as a result of stroke, brain injury or brain illness. We provide adults with aphasia and other communication disabilities the opportunity to practice communication in a safe, supported and fun group environment.


Do you have any age requirements?
18


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No additional languages required, though we strongly encourage those with another language to apply as they may be able to support our clients who speak other languages


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
4 hours per week, for a minimum of 6 months


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Volunteers must be willing to submit two references and a vulnerable sector search obtained through their local police department (reimbursed)


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Patience and a desire to help others


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Volunteers will provide support to adults with communication difficulties by participating in group conversation sessions about current events, music, food, art and much more. Volunteers may also provide 1-on-1 support by developing Life History Communication Books for our clients.
We have volunteer opportunities in Maple, Richmond Hill, Stouffville, Newmarket, Whitby and Peterborough.

Volunteer Orientation; Understanding Disability and Loss; Skills Development in Communication Disorders; Life History Communication Books; and many more opportunities to learn and grow with us
