LAGOON SOCIETY

The Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve is a 10 hectare reserve featuring a freshwater lagoon and forested acreage on the Sunshine Coast, northwest of Vancouver. The Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society is a non-profit society and registered charity incorporated in April 2002 (Charitable #: 85237 7530 RR0001).

The purpose of our Society is to preserve and enhance the natural habitat and wildlife of the Ruby Lake Lagoon, to facilitate local environmental education and to assist in monitoring the ecological health of the region. We built and operate the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre, provide diverse public education programs and events, and conduct a variety of environmental stewardship activities on the Sunshine Coast.

Volunteer Information for Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society

What services does your organization provide?
We run Nature School programs for local elementary and high school students, and have a summer drop-in kids camp called the Lagoonies Club. We offer a wide array of workshops and trainings on everything from natural building and sustainability information to wildlife, ecosystem and biodiversity workshops.
We run a Nature Interpretive Centre that is open to the public 7 days a week, and we run various events and programs to increase local knowledge on biodiversity, nature and wildlife.


Do you have any age requirements?
Must have own transportation and be willing to work a minimum of 2 hours. No minimum age (we even have a 10 year old girl volunteering with us this year!).


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Docents for the Centre (Nature Centre hosts) must be willing to work a minimum of 2 hours, and we prefer those who may be available for a 6 hour shift (opening hours are 10 am to 4 pm).


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Comfortable dealing with the public, some knowledge of nature / wildlife is an asset. Cash-handling, opening and closing skills are great, but we can also train.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?

  • Centre hosts / Docents.
  • Grounds and Centre maintenance.
  • Building (we always have a project on the go!)
  • Event / Workshop help.
  • Postering, event promotion.
  • Gardening / Native plant nursery help.
  • Biodiversity park help (trails, remove invasives, etc).

Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Training relevant to the position will be provided.
