What services does your organization provide?

  • Community Outreach & Education program
  • On Site High School Program
  • Nursery and Respite Care
  • Housing Assistance including 16 units owned by Jessie's
  • Parenting, Individual and Couples Counselling
  • Health Services-pregnancy, mothering and nutrition education
  • Breakfast and Lunch Mondays to Thursdays as well as dinner Monday and Tuesday evenings


Do you have any age requirements?
Volunteers must be 18 years of age.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Commitment of: One four hour shift per week for a minimum of six months


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Police, Health and Reference checks are mandatory


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Position specific

  • Experience with working with children
  • Experience working in a kitchen
  • Experience working with women during maternity

What type of volunteer positions are typically available?

  • Parent Child Centre - Engaging with small children
  • Kitchen - helping prepare nutritious meals
  • Labour and Support Volunteers

Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Moslty on the job training except for labour and Support Volunteers which includes a 2 full day training session offered by our own Health Professionals.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?

  • Helping prepare meals for young mothers
  • Playing with, changing and feeding young children
  • Working with expectant young women to support them through their pregnancy

How will a person benefit from volunteering with Jessie's The June Callwood Centre for Young Women?
Gain experience working with youth (mothers) and young children.
Develop an understanding of:

  • The barriers young pregnant women and young mothers face
  • Importance of parenting skills and the tools available
  • Importance of nutrition and how to prepare healthy meals

Do you accept high school students?
High School students are generally too young to be a part of our volunteer program.
