Heart Niagara (1977) has a distinguished record of guiding advances in cardiac health education and services in Niagara that are yielding improvement in access to primary and secondary prevention programs, training in bystander CPR and public access defibrillation.

Much goodwill exists for Heart Niagara for its considerable contributions to the Niagara health care agenda. This respected not-for-profit charitable organization has mapped out its direction and strategy for the next phase of its evolution. This juncture has allowed Heart Niagara to consider what's possible, based on vision and values.

Heart Niagara empowers our community to take control of heart health by providing children and adults with education, training and tools and through strategic partnerships. The Board of Directors with support from staff and consultants will provide greater detail on success indicators, timelines, and accountability to increase the success through to 2012.

What services does your organization provide?
Community Preparedness:

  • CPR training, AED training and placement
  • Diagnostic Program: Echosonography, Stress testing
  • Healthy Heart Schools' Program: CPR & AED Training,Family education,CV Risk assessment
  • Health Professionals Education
  • Healthy Daily Living Program: Cooking for a Healthier You, Smoke Cessation Counseling, HEART Project
  • Investigator Initiated Research
  • Workplace Wellness: Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Clinics, Employee Investment Programs


Do you have any age requirements?
Requirements depend on the nature of the activity. Volunteering opportunities are available for adolescents with proof of parental permission.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No, however additional languages may be an asset.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Time commitments vary. For fundraisers there may be opportunities for a 6 hours through 40 hours. Ongoing commitments are available within Heart Niagara. Reliability is a key asset when volunteering.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Heart Niagara requires responsible and dependable volunteers. CPR training, organizational skills, marketing, fundraising and computer skills are assets. Signing of a confidentiality agreement is required.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Your skills will determine the volunteer options available for you. We have a need for many different skill sets and experience levels. Heart Niagara offers health services, cooking classes and delivers many special events. Through the interview process our staff will match you with an opportunity you are prepared for and interested in.

Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Training will depend on the nature of the volunteer position. We will not put volunteers into positions for which they are not qualified or comfortable with. CPR and AED certification may be provided.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Volunteer opportunities may arise in health services, cooking classes, or other areas. However we particularly need volunteers for special events and fundraisers. Please contact us to see what is available. Your skills and experience will help to determine your role at Heart Niagara.

Heart Niagara provides important cardiovascular health education and services for the Niagara area. By volunteering you can be assured that you are having a positive impact on the health of our community. Do you accept high school students?
Yes. High school students can inquire about the opportunities available for them. We are happy to provide a letter of confirmation of participation and/or sign volunteer hour sheets for student volunteers.
