Volunteer Information for Graffiti Art Programming Inc

What services does your organization provide?
Graffiti Art Programming Inc. is a multi-faceted organization that operates and supports the four following programs, st.ART Project, Urban Canvas Project, Graffiti Gallery and the Commercial Division.

st.ART Project
The st.ART Project addresses the need for accessible education based art programming in Winnipeg's core areas, by offering free after school art class's to children, youth and young adults. Studios are located in Point Douglas, the North End and Downtown.

Urban Canvas Project
The objective of UCP is to provide marketable labour skills that assist in securing employment in the Painter-Decorator-Muralist field for low-income Aboriginal, Inuit, M,tis and non-status Aboriginal people.

Community Urban Art Gallery (Graffiti Gallery)
The Graffiti Gallery is located at 109 Higgins Avenue in Winnipeg's Point Douglas Neighbourhood and is an accessible and ever-changing art space where Winnipeg comes together, to celebrate the urban art genre and the power of urban creativity. The Graffiti Gallery hosts 6 - 8 shows per year, with an average of over 300 people per exhibit opening; there is no cost to attend exhibits at the gallery and only ask for a donation of a non-perishable food item to our food bank when attending an exhibit. The Gallery has over 3,000 visitors per year.

Commercial Division
Graffiti Art Programming Inc. artists provide a high quality and professional art service for commercial businesses, community centers, schools and homeowners throughout the community. Graffiti Art Programming Inc. believes in supporting local and emerging artists in generating income though the arts and provides the artist that opportunity when contributing in a community project. Our Commercial Director will help with some or all stages of the process, including locating artists, negotiating a contract or letter of agreement, and managing the process to final completion.


Do you have any age requirements?
The minimum age requirement to be a volunteer at Graffiti Art Programming Inc. would be 15 years old or a grade 9 student.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
English only.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Our regular hours of operation is from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5 pm, . Volunteer hours would be based on the volunteer skills, we would be able to host a maximum of volunteer hours of 8 hours and a minimum of 1 hour per day.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Volunteers must show an interest in Arts: (visual arts/media arts/theatre/dance/music/etc.)and/or furthering their knowledge of art.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
There are no limitation of skills required and are open to all levels of skill and experience.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
We provide a unique opportuntiy for volunteers to get involved with the community. We can provide positions in the st.ART Project for our customized workshops that are offered to visiting groups, or co-curating for an exhibit opening in Graffiti Gallery


Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Participants will recieve hands on training in preparing, handling and installing art work and projects for exhibit openings in Graffiti Gallery. As well as preparing the process for our customized workshops, training includes recording the customized workshops, coordinating with artists and handling, cleaning and setting up equipment and supplies, such as sound equipment, paint, brushes, tables and chairs.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Graffiti Art Programming Inc. offers visiting groups and exciting urban art opportunity:
The st.Art Project's commercial division is designed to address the need for affordable and educational arts program for children, youth and adults. The commercial division allows the st.Art Project to provide customized and interactive workshops to schools, post-secondary institutes, childcare centers and other organizations. These organizations are given the opportunity to participate in the interactive programs that st.Art provides through the local community centers. Customized workshops include the following: Vinyl Painting, Hip hop dancing, break dancing, DJ/Turntablism Silk-screening and Interactive Muralling. Volunteers will have the opportunity in assisting, preparing and participating in the various workshops with our creative instructors.


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Graffiti Art Programming Inc?
The benefits that the volunteer will recieve is the hands on training and the process for preparing for an art gallery exhibit opening. As well as for our customized workshops through the st.ART Project, volunteers will work closely with our lead artists in preparing for a workshop and how we are involved with the community through art and will experience how much the community appreciates and supports the services that we provide for children and youth.


Do you accept high school students?
Graffiti Art Programming Inc. is always open to accepting volunteers and has supported students in the past with fulfilling graduation requirments through community service hours.
