Volunteer Information for Georgian Bay Folk Society

What services does your organization provide?
The GBFS presents Folk arts to the community, and presents an annual 3 day festival called Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival.


Do you have any age requirements?
Eighteen is the minimum age for volunteering independently, but we also have an apprenticeship program to train and introduce young people to volunteer opportunities with our organization.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
Although not a requirement, we appreciate anyone with french or spanish as a second language.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
We have several levels of volunteering, from 12 hours to assist at the festival, to joining a committee that meets year long to carry on the business of the Society, to sitting on the Board of Directors.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Everyone signs an agreeement to work within the values of the organization, and a code of behaviour. For certain positions, an oath of confidentiality is also required.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Good people skills to start, and then previous volunteer experience; technical kowledge of sound, or lighting, or social media; marketing/promotion experience; purchasing experience; etc.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Depends on time and interests the volunteer wishes to offer.


Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Some training, usually hands-on, is offered in the form of serving as an assistant and being mentored by a seasoned volunteer in specific areas. Orientation for coordinators and Board Directors is also offered.


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Georgian Bay Folk Society?
Enhance their ability/skills in team work; meet and work with people who are very committed to the organization and the programs; could grow into leadership roles as crew chiefs, coordinators and Directors.

Yes.
