Volunteer Information for Furry Friends Animal Shelter

What services does your organization provide?
We provide care to almost 1,000 animals each year - mostly cats and kittens, though we also sometimes care for abandoned dogs (if foster homes are available for them; we do not house dogs in our shelter).

Do you have any age requirements?
Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. However, if someone younger than 16 wishes to volunteer, we will accept them as long as they are accompanied by an adult parent or guardian who is willing to volunteer with them and be responsible for them.

Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No

What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Most of our volunteers work at least one 3-4 hour shift per week. However, there are no minimum requirements.

Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Volunteers must have a love of cats and be able to work with them (i.e. no allergies or other health conditions that would be adversely affected by working in a shelter environment).

Are there any specific skills and experience required?
No specific skill or experience is required.

What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Volunteer positions can range from cleaning & feeding, to administering medications and caring for sick animals, fund-raising committees, adoption centre respresentatives, etc.

Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Hands-on training is provided by experienced volunteers in the shelter or in the adoption centre.

What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Typical activities are cleaning, feeding, giving attention and affection to our many cats as well as interacting with potential adopters and hopefully processing adoption paperwork.

How will a person benefit from volunteering with Furry Friends Animal Shelter?
Volunteers get a great deal of personal satisfaction from providing a clean, comfortable environment for these unfortunate animals. And being a part of their adoption into a loving forever home brings great joy to our volunteers as well.

Do you accept high school students?
Yes, many high school students earn their community service hours with Furry Friends.
