The Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is a 4,800 acre day use nature preserve that was donated to the people of Alberta by Ann and Sandy Cross. The Area showcases Alberta's beautiful natural diversity with rolling foothills and a mixture of grasslands and aspen forests. It is home to over 400 plant species and an abundance of wildlife. People enjoy the Area through 22 kilometres of scenic hiking trails and self-guided interpretive walks.
Since 1993 over 95,000 youth and adults have participated in hands-on, conservation based learning opportunities offered by this non-profit organization.

Volunteer Information for Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area

What services does your organization provide?
1. We protect habitat and provide space for native species of wildlife through the careful management of the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area's natural resources.
2. We offer conservation education programs, particularly for young people, without jeopardizing area wildlife and habitat. Our innovative programs foster awareness, appreciation and action while managing risk for all education participants.
3. We manage human use of the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area through a system of entry by appointment only, and other impact reduction techniques.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Various - from 3 hours a month to 8 hours a week. A one year time commitment is required.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Police security check.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?

  • The appropriate physical ability and enjoy being outside.
  • The appropriate time available.
  • Interest in the area and in conservation and protection of natural areas.
  • Interpersonal communication skills.

What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Area Steward - To provide a presence on the land on a regular basis by hiking designated trails and recording plant and animal sightings.
Education Volunteer - Offer quality experiential educational opportunities for school groups, in conservation issues and natural history.
Special Projects - Includes: Landscaping/gardening, Trail clearing and maintenance, Fence removal/putting up new fencing, Area and building maintenance.


Do you provide training for volunteers?
Yes. There is a general orientation to the Area, and then each Volunteer job has training specified to the role, often involving shadowing an experience volunteer.
