The Alzheimer Society of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland and Haliburton provides service throughout all four counties including the communities of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes Lindsay, Haliburton, Minden, Cobourg,Port Hope Campbellford, Havelock and Millbrook

It is estimated that more than 5,000 people in our catchment area have Alzheimer disease and a related dementia. It is estimated that this number will grow to more than 12,000 by year 2025.

What services does your organization provide?
The Alzheimer Society of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland and Haliburton provides supportive services at no charge to families and individuals affected by Alzheimer disease and related dementias, education for caregivers both professional and non-professional, and continues activity for those affected through our Friendly Visiting Program.


Do you have any age requirements?
Over age 18


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
Additional languages are always an asset. Friendly Visiting Volunteers may be matched with a person with dementia who speaks the same language.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Friendly Visitors are asked to make a commitment of 2 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months.

The schedule of office volunteers is flexible but the commitment is approximately 2-3 hours per week, or as often as the volunteer is able to commit to.

Other volunteer opportunities are episodic and may involve a commitment of a few hours once a month. Or short term regular commitments like 3 hours every other week for only 4 months.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Depending on the level of access to information regarding clients and donors a police check and/or vulnerable sector screen is required.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Experience and skills are specific to the different volunteer opportunities available. Role descriptions are available for most volunteer opportunities.


Do you provide training for volunteers?
3-4 hours of orientation depending on the position.

Volunteers will gain experience in the role that compliments their education, skills, and interests. Volunteers have the opportunity to receive referrals from staff at the end of their commitment.


Do you accept high school students?
Highschool students are accepted however given the hours of operation (8:30-4:30) of our offices volunteer opportunities are often limited to one-time events.
