What is Statistics?

Statistics is a mathematical science concerned with the collection and interpretation of quantitative data and the use of probability theory to estimate population parameters. Because of its empirical roots and its focus on applications, statistics is usually considered to be a distinct mathematical science rather than a branch of applied mathematics.

Statisticians improve the quality of data with the design of experiments and survey sampling. Statistics also provides tools for prediction and forecasting using data and statistical models. Statistics can be used in almost every academic discipline.

About Statistics

Statistics is closely related to probability theory (and is often grouped with it). Some consider it to be a branch of applied mathematics. Statistics is also a integral part of actuarial science. Biostatistics is a subdiscipline that is concerned primarily with biology and life processes and is covered in another article.
