Statistics Research Areas and Disciplines

One area of statistics research is to provide an accurate database from which to draw upon. For example, the various Research Data Centres set up by Statistics Canada and university consortia have been set up to strengthen Canada's social research capacity and to support the policy research community. They provide researchers with access, in a secure university setting, to microdata from population and household surveys. New data is always being added to these repositories.

There is ongoing research into environmental and biostatistics. See the article on biostatistics for more information.

Many researchers are involved in the methodology and applications of Bayesian statistics (changing an existing belief in the light of new evidence). A particular theme has been efficient computation. For example, scientists have been developing new Sequential Monte Carlo methods, which are an alternative to the Monte Carlo Markov Chain method.

Research on robust statistics focuses on making statistical methods less sensitive to unusual, exteme values and to incorrect modeling assumptions. Researchers have shown that a maximum asymptotic bias approach can lead to of useful statistical procedures, via the construction of bias bounds and global robust inference (which takes into account the effect of bias caused by data contamination).
