Mining Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines |
A lot of research into mining engineering revolves around creating safer environments for workers. This includes research into designing more effective and safer mine shafts using mathematical modeling, resolving ventilation issues, and effects of blasting.
Collaborating with hydrologists, mining engineers also are doing research into how the underlying water table affects mining operations, and designing mines that will be impacted the least by this.
There is a lot of research into the environmental impact of mines. Current research in this area includes wastewater management, mine tailings, the sequestering of greenhouse gasses, and the geological long-term effects of mining. Efforts are underway to manage land that has been mined previously, and to clean up mines from years' past.
Mining engineers also work with mechanical engineers to design more effective mining equipment and the heavy machinery that goes along with mining. Technology into strong but lightweight materials, equipment that will withstand abuse, and remote mining techniques such as robotics are all being investigated.
