Geochemistry Research Areas and Disciplines

Many researchers are working with private enterprises to determine the locations of various minerals, ores, and oil. They are working with geotechnical engineers, chemists, geologists, and mining engineers to develop new detection and extraction methods.

Surveying is an important part of current research. Scientists are working to survey and map various regions of Canada, especially the Far North, in order to determine areas of groundwater and minerals. This research can assist companies in deciding where to put housing projects, for example, or assist in pinpointing where drilling should take place.

Geochemistry is also used for environmental risk assessment. Geochemical analyses can be used to determine the naturally occurring levels of elements and substances in the ecosystem or to ascertain if any non-naturally occurring substances are present. Because the health of humans and animals is affected by the geochemical composition of the land on which they live, by having knowledge of areas where health threats exist, these can be addressed or mitigated.

Another area of research is to identify the minerals that contain the trace elements of potential environmental concern. This is important since the chemical and physical properties of the host minerals play a key role in the behavior of elements of potential environmental concern. This includes elements such as copper, lead, zinc, and mercury, and metalloids like arsenic.
