Employment Resources and Professions Available to Geochemistry Graduates

Many geochemists are employed by the Geological Survey of Canada, where they work to map the land for minerals, groundwater, ores, and other commercially-valuable substances. These people tend to work both in the laboratory and in the field.

Laboratory research is also available through employment with universities. These people tend to teach chemistry, geology, or geochemistry as well as do research. Teaching is also available for those with an additional BEd degree, for teaching chemistry or geology at the high school level.

Private industries also employ geochemists. For example, environmental management companies may consult with a geochemist to help them determine the best way to dispose of hazardous or toxic materials. Petroleum and mining firms will also employ geochemists. Some geochemists become private consultants or suppliers for geological and geochemical expeditions. They can also work with other scientists and engineers and write technical reports that are useful to mining and petroleum operations, resource management, and environmental programs.

A degree in geochemistry can also lead to a career in law or business, such as in environmental law or running a petroleum enterprise. It can also be used as a stepping-stone for a career in geological or geotechnical engineering.
