University of New Brunswick Law SchoolMooting and Clinical ProgramsThe Faculty is also home to several experiential learning possibilities through which students may develop and hone their practical skills, such as their respective advocacy, argumentative, and lawyering abilities, and deal directly with the dynamics of the legal world. Such opportunities are available primarily via mooting and clinical work. Mooting, which allows 'students to develop their written and oral advocacy skills and argue cases in front of practicing judges and lawyers' is part of the compulsory curriculum for 1st year LLB students.
Upper year students may audition to compete in several national and international moot court competitions including the Gale Cup Moot, Jessup Moot, Laskin Memorial Moot, McKelvey/Sopinka Cup Moot, Trilateral Moot, and the in-house Harrison Shield Moot (for 3rd year students only). Opportunities for clinical experience is somewhat limited at UNB Law and is primarily offered via student organizations such as the Poverty Law Society and Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC). In addition, the UNB Law Journal, which, founded in 1947, is the 'fourth oldest student-run legal publication in Canada,' offers students the opportunity to gain experience as editors and/or writers; working on the Journal is worth academic credit.
