Students taking a veterinarian assistant or technician program take courses designed to train them for everyday duties at an animal clinic or shelter. They learn how to handle "companion animals" (pets), grooming, kennel duties, feeding, and client relations. They also learn clinical skills such as animal anatomy, animal behavior, and coat and skin care.
Students in longer and more in-depth programs begin with basic animal anatomy and physiology, as well as biochemistry and health management. They make clinical presentations, learn clinical and professional skills, and take field courses.
Advanced courses include animal surgical techniques, emergency and critical care, and internal medicine. Students take their theoretical knowledge to the operating theatre where they practice on animal cadavers, or to the laboratory where they analyze tissue samples and toxicology reports. Field trips to animal clinics are common, where students get to watch operations in progress, assist in outpatient procedures, and learn the day-to-day procedures of working with animals.
Usually the final year of veterinary school is spent in practicum rotations where they decide on a field of interest. Students take sessions in general veterinary practice and laboratory diagnostics, and focus on their chosen area of specialization. They may take a greater role in animal surgical (or other) procedures, such as births, routine surgeries, or the maintenance of animal hygiene.
Graduate students specialize in a particular field of interest and do an independent research project. Seminars in recent advances in veterinary science are offered as part of the curriculum, where students can learn about advances in their chosen field and study specific cases.
