To get into a Master's degree program in theoretical or mathematical physics, students must have an undergraduate degree in a related field such as physics, mathematics, or engineering, with at least a B+ average. Experience through co-op, directed studies, or industry experience is considered an asset. To get into a PhD program in theoretical or mathematical physics, students must have a Master's degree in a related field. Some schools allow transfer from the Master's degree to the PhD degree after 1 year, while others allow direct entry to the PhD program from the undergraduate program. In both cases the student must have demonstrated exceptional research skills and have high (A-) academic marks.
For all graduate degrees, the supervisor must be chosen prior to final admission.
