Power Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines |
Current research in power engineering includes electric motor drives, uninterruptible power supplies, power system protection, and nuclear power plant control and instrumentation. Most research is carried out in collaboration with private industry such as Texas Instruments, GE, and Schweitzer Engineering Labs.
Electric motor drives is a burgeoning area of research in automotive technology. Current projects include increasing the longevity of electric batteries in commercially produced electrical vehicles (both for increased mileage per charge, and also for long-term battery replacement). As well, electrical power grids are being designed for future transportation systems.
Uninterruptible power supplies (battery backup) research focuses on current difficulties faced with governor use, in order to provide continuous power during electrical blackouts. This is particularly useful for data centers where large amounts of data are continually being stored, and power must be available continuously. This relates to power system protection research as well. New technologies in surge protectors and protective relays are being developed as well.
