Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Physiology and Biophysics |
Admission to a graduate-level program requires a previous degree in a related discipline with a minimum B+ average (in some cases this must be an honors degree). Since research in physiology requires a rather broad background from a number of fields, the completion of courses in physiology, biochemistry, physics, calculus, and statistics is recommended. Some schools also require some form of advanced laboratory experience in a related research environment (eg. co-op, directed studies, employment as a laboratory technician, etc.). Letters of reference are necessary for admission to some school's physiology programs.
Admission to a PhD program can either be directly from an undergraduate degree (in addition to already having extensive research experience, and being published in a peer-reviewed journal), or after acquiring a relevant MSc degree.
Applicants who hold international degrees and wish admission to a graduate-level degree must supply a GRE (graduate record exam) with a suitable score (usually at least 75%).
As all graduate programs require a supervisor, some schools require this person to be approved prior to final admission.
