Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Pediatrics |
All medical schools in Canada offer an MD program in pediatrics. Additionally, the University of Alberta offers a graduate program (MSc, and PhD) in pediatrics.
Admission to the University of Alberta's pediatric graduate program requires candidates to hold at least a 4-year undergraduate degree. A B+ average in the last 2 years of the previous undergraduate degree is necessary. Additionally, 3 letters of reference are required prior to final admission.
Standards for Canadian MD applicants are usually more relaxed compared to International applicants. Students currently taking an undergraduate degree in any discipline are usually eligible for admission to the MD program; in some cases full completion of the previous degree is mandatory. Some schools require an average of at least B in the previous degree (and of course, the higher the average, the better). Completion of relevant courses such as biology or chemistry is considered an asset, rounded out with several humanities and social sciences courses. Additionally, the MCAT (medical college admission test) must be written. A score of at least 27 is considered an asset for admission.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
