Studying Organic Chemistry in Canada |
Organic chemists are required to be good problem solvers and to be able to take information about organic compounds to create new ones. To accomplish this, students learn how to draw and name organic molecules and the reactions involving organic compounds. Students also learn about lipids, proteins, DNA replication, protein synthesis, and other biochemical reactions. See the article on biochemistry for more information.
Students also learn about organometallic chemistry, where they learn about the bonding and reactivity in organometallic compounds with a heavy emphasis on the role of these compounds in catalysis. As well, they investigate the synthesis of natural products (especially alkaloids, steroids, and terpenes), the fundamental principles of bond formation, and radical reactions. Industrial organic chemistry studies include the production and use of primary petrochemicals, plastics, pharmaceutical agents, insecticides, dyes, detergents, perfumes, and commercially important microbial transformations.
Hands-on laboratory studies teach the techniques of organic chemistry such as mass spectrometry, NMR, UV, and IR spectroscopies. Students learn to create, manipulate, and analyze organic compounds and their possible new uses.
