Research and development is the primary opportunity in industry. Organic chemists can work for the pharmaceutical industry, where they work with biochemists and others to develop new drugs. The petroleum industry will also employ organic chemists in order to facilitate the exploration and extraction of oil, natural gas, and other organic compounds of commercial use. Chemical and process engineers will employ organic chemists to develop new products such as new polymers and solvents.
The law enforcement industry uses organic chemists as forensic scientists, where they use organic chemistry to analyze blood or saliva at crime scenes.
Many organic chemists work in academia, holding positions that include undergraduate and graduate teaching and research. They can also work in a high school environment teaching chemistry (with the additional education degree).
