Graduate students in the University of Alberta's experimental oncology program take mainly a directed-studies approach so they can focus on a project of their choice. However certain advanced oncology courses are necessary, such as cancer genetics, drug resistance, tumor immunology, and cancer imaging.
All MD students, after completion of their background courses, take a rotation in the various oncology sciences (radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology). Subjects include cancer risks, principles of cancer therapy, cancer prevention, cancer screening, and interpretation of imaging and pathological data. In general, all oncology students will learn the role of surgical oncologists, palliative care physicians, psychiatrists, and other specialists in caring for cancer patients.
Seminars and conferences are also offered to oncology students where they can learn about the newest methodologies and techniques, and also present case histories, therapies, and results of their own.
