Oncologists have a wide variety of employment choices. They can work with patients, performing surgery or administering chemotherapy at large hospitals. They can also work in a radiology department as a diagnostic technician, or in a nursing capacity (eg. palliative care or nursing homes).
Oncologists can also work in research centers where they have less contact with patients, working on creating new chemical therapies to combat cancer. Oncologists can also work in an administrative capacity as the heads of research centers or the oncology departments of hospitals. They can also teach oncology at the university level, usually in conjunction with practicing clinically.
