Studying Informatics in Canada

Students in informatics learn about the links between the various disciplines involved (computer science, mathematics, information science, biology, health sciences, etc). They learn about information and knowledge, patterns and searching, management of complexity, models of the real world, and legal and ethical issues. They also develop skills in a wide variety of areas such as creativity, lateral thinking, communication, teamwork, and project management.

Students learn about computer programming using a scripting language such as Python. They also learn software development techniques for programming and software development in a procedural language. They study source code management, testing strategies, debugging, and basic scripting techniques.

Students who choose to specialize in health informatics learn about its world context, its origins, its purposes, and the nature of its current body of knowledge. This includes the role and use of information and communications technology in health care and health related organizations. Students study health care data and information: how health care information is currently captured, converted to machine language, stored and accessed. Students are exposed to various current applications in areas such as e-health and telemedicine.

Group projects, mentoring, and field trips augment classroom studies. The use of computers is highly integrated in all learning.
