Informatics Research Areas and Disciplines

One area of current research is to develop more effective ways to manage information gathered from very large information spaces such as the World Wide Web with inadequate user interfaces. Researchers are designing user-interface approaches that reduce the cognitive load placed on the user by the interface. One method being developed is classed as a `detail-in-context` method, based on a method called the Continuous Zoom, which has applications for air traffic control.

Other researchers are using computer systems to create more user-friendly databases for medical, health, and biological information. For example, researchers are working to collate and standardize all health information so that patient's information is readily available at any physician's office. These people are working with those in the computer and information security areas to ensure these databases, while accessible to those authorized, are also private and safe.

Bioinformatics uses the same principles; see the article on bioinformatics for more information on research in that area.

Other research is in visualization. A recent example of using visualization is in designing and deploying distributed visual environments to help people monitor their energy and resource use in the home. This can lead to more energy efficient usage, and also lead to homes that are computer controlled via voice and body presence.
