Studying Immunology in Canada

Students start off with introductory courses in immunology, designed to teach them the principles such as antigen specificity, chemistry of antibodies, regulation of the immune response, and transplantation basics.

Specialized courses such as molecular immunology and medical immunology are offered, depending on whether the ultimate degree is a research-based or clinical degree. Medical immunology courses include the study of HIV, allergies, host resistance, and organ transplantations. Seminars in advanced immunology are offered on a regular basis, and keep students apprised of recent advances in immunology, new methodologies, and results of clinical trials. Students are usually expected to partake in these seminars by presenting their own research on a regular basis.

Clinical immunology students learn how to test for allergies, various treatment options available including drugs, and post-treatment procedures. Rotations are spent in a variety of departments, including pediatrics (since many allergies manifest at an early age), the emergency department (acute allergic responses), and pathology/lab medicine (laboratory research).
