Immunology Research Areas and Disciplines |
Research areas focus on several areas, including developmental immunology, immune deficiencies, cancer immunology, and transplantation.
Developmental immunology research looks at how the immune system develops over time, and certain diseases that can manifest at this time. Research into innate vs. adaptive immunology, childhood diseases, and allergies such as those towards peanuts or asthma are currently underway.
Immune deficiency research includes the study of HIV and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanism of how the immune system allows diseases to take hold, effective therapies, surgical options, and how to manage such disorders are studied. A variety of drug trials for HIV are ongoing, with new treatment options almost daily due to the volume of research in this disease.
Cancer immunology is a growing research area that aims to discover therapies to treat and halt progression of the disease. The role of viruses in development of cancer is being researched (eg. cervical and breast cancer), which may result in ways to prevent or treat other forms of cancer.
Transplantation research consists of finding ways to lessen the impact of transplantation surgery, either through other types of transplantation (eg. bone marrow transplant to confer immunity from host to recipient) or chemotherapeutic drugs such as corticosteroids.
