What is Gerontology?Gerontology (also called aging studies) is the study of the social, psychological, and biological aspects of aging. It includes the physical, mental, and social changes in people as they age; normal ageing vs. age-related disease; and the effects of an ageing population on society.
Gerontology can be subdivided into biogerontology and social gerontology. Medical gerontology is essentially geriatrics (see this article for more information). Biogerontology focuses on the biological aspects of aging and experimental work in life extension. Social gerontology focuses more on working with actual elderly people on a social and community level, such as providing counseling, advocacy, care coordination, and hospice work. |
About GerontologyGerontology is similar to geriatrics; however geriatrics focuses more on the medical and disease aspects of the elderly. Gerontology is related to palliative care, developmental psychology, social work, dementia studies, and nursing. Due to its nature as the study of a specific group of people, gerontology also has aspects similar to equity studies. |
