Studying Gerontology in Canada

Students studying gerontology gain an understanding of aging issues within and across different contexts: cultural, economic, healthcare, physiological, psychological, and social. Students also learn about the challenges that exist in addressing health, social care, welfare, and the accommodation needs of the elderly. Students also examine new technologies for the treatment of various issues in the elderly, as well as the ethical and social issues associated with treating the elderly.

Students study the concept of aging-in-place, which supports the choice of the elderly to remain living in their preferred environment for as long as possible even if circumstances change. Students study the physical environment, social and psychological support, and community resources that affect aging-in-place.

Students also learn about the medical aspects of aging, especially the concept of palliative and supportive care; see the article on palliative care. In addition to the biological and medical aspects, students examine issues in ethics, current policies, social trends, and differences amongst various countries with respect to how they treat their elderly citizens.

Students often have a practicum session in their program which enables them to take their classroom learning and apply it to the real world. Students study current practices in hospitals, hospices, and community centers and work directly with the aged. As well, students discuss current issues in gerontology through the participation in seminars and workshops.
