Prerequisites Needed to Study Gerontology in Canada |
Gerontology is a relatively new field and many schools are now only offering programs in gerontology or aging studies. Schools offering a gerontology or aging option are often doing so through their social work, health studies, or human ecology departments.
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program in gerontology or aging studies, students must have completed high school with English and a B- average. Depending on the department applying through, additional requirements such as biology, chemistry, and mathematics may be required. Since some programs involve direct working with the elderly, students may be subject to a criminal record check and have a clean medical record.
Some schools offer complementary certificates and diplomas which may be taken concurrently with a separate undergraduate degree program; others are post-secondary and the student must have completed a relevant undergraduate degree in human ecology, social work, social sciences, nursing, or medicine. Professionals involved in developing or offering programs for older adults are also eligible for admission.
