Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Biostatistics |
Many schools offer graduate programs in biostatistics. For admission to the Master's level programs, a previous undergraduate degree in a related subject (statistics, biostatistics, etc) is required with at least a B+ average. For the PhD programs, a Master's level degree is required for admission. Some schools allow PhD students direct admission from an undergraduate program, while others allow a transfer from a Master's level program after one year. In all cases, a supervisor must be chosen prior to final admission.
The University of Toronto offers a dedicated graduate degree in biostatistics (through the department of public health), where you can acquire an MSc, or PhD. A previous 4-year undergraduate degree with an average of at least B in the final year is necessary for admission to the MSc program. You also need to have taken an undergraduate statistics course. To get into the PhD program you need an MSc degree with relevant research experience (statistics, biostatistics, biology, computer science, or economics), with an average of at least A-.
