Biological Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines |
Most biological engineering research revolves around 3 main themes: bioprocess engineering, genetic engineering, and biomedical engineering.
An example of current bioprocess engineering research is the use of wood and other renewable materials to replace petroleum in the energy and industrial product industries. Examples include the bioprocessing of ethanol, acetic acid, and polymers to use as alternative energy sources to oil, natural gas, and coal. This technology is being developed in collaboration with environmental and chemical engineers, and is being applied in a variety of fields including the automotive industry.
Genetic engineering techniques are being investigated for a variety of fields. These include improving crops to resist insect pests, bacterial, and fungal infections. As well, they are being engineered to resist herbicides, have longer freshness, or have superior nutritional value to non-engineered crops.
The manufacture of synthetic human insulin through the use of modified bacteria is another area of genetic engineering, with the hope of improving the lives of diabetics. As well, the development of more effective pharmaceuticals with fewer side effects is underway, such as the development of anti-tumor drugs to fight cancer.
As well, see the article on biomedical engineering for current research in that area.
