Zoology Research Areas and Disciplines

Zoology research is wide and varied, due to the wide array of animals subject to investigation. Research can range from cellular and genetic studies, to animal physiology and anatomy, to broad-scale ecology.

An example of marine zoological research includes hormone regulation in fish. Since these hormones affect growth and reproduction, understanding this is important for aquaculture and fish management. As well, animal energetic studies include studies of thermal biology, in particular the physiological problems encountered during swimming and diving in cold water. This research has applications for the human body while working in polar environments.

Several types of animals are being cloned for a variety of purposes. This can range from the basic research of understanding the basic physiology and genetics of animals, and how this affects the cloning ability. The cloning of animals can also be used to study control of gene expression. As well, cloned animals are quite useful for a variety of other types of studies requiring genetically uniform specimens. Animals being studied for cloning purposes include cattle, dogs, goats, sheep, and rabbits.

Other research attempts to understand how evolutionary pressures have shaped physiological systems among animals and to determine the degree to which physiological systems can adapt/acclimate to environmental changes. This information is useful for the fields of aquaculture, agriculture, veterinary science, and other fields of biological science.
