Depending on the field of specialization, zoologists can work in a wide variety of environments. Zoologists can get work teaching at the high school level (with an additional degree in education) or at the post-secondary level, where they also perform research. They can also work in the writing of scientific textbooks.
Technical work is available in many zoology labs and research stations. They can work as research or field assistants, technical assistants, or project managers.
Many zoologists choose to pursue a career in animal husbandry where they work with veterinarians and animal scientists on farms, zoos, aquaria, or animal clinics. As well, they can work in biomedical engineering and biotechnology doing small-scale research or scale-up applications for human use. They can work with hospital staff or private enterprise in pharmacology or toxicology.
Zoologists with advanced or additional degrees can work in public education and environmental awareness programs, such as that found in museums, Parks Canada, or Natural Resources Canada. They can also work in conservation and endangered species management, or for those with a business degree, in environmental consulting.
A degree in zoology can be used for further studies in veterinary science, medicine, dentistry, law (eg. resource and wildlife law), or engineering (eg. bioengineering or biomedical engineering).
