Most people with a degree in earthquake engineering will work with civil and structural engineers to design buildings and structures in earthquake-prone areas, such as the west coast of Canada. These people are involved in all aspects of building and structure design, from the initial drafting, to computer simulations, to prototyping, to the finished result.
Earthquake engineers can also work independently on a contract basis for construction companies, civil engineering firms, and various government agencies. Earthquake engineers who acquire their professional engineering designation (P.Eng) are also qualified to sign-off on buildings or structures that have been retrofitted to current earthquake standards.
