University Facts and Statistics: University of St. Michael's College |
The University of St. Michael’s College, often called 'St. Mike’s,' is a Catholic post-secondary institution founded by the Basilian Fathers in 1852 and which federated with the University of Toronto in 1910 and is today one the schools that constitutes the latter’s main St. George campus. While students of St. Michael’s College have unhindered access to the University of Toronto’s library, St. Mike’s has its own library, called the John M. Library, whose over 275,000 books, 1000 videos, 500 journal subscriptions, and wide array of electronic material from some 100 computer stations are specifically on topics important to students of the College. The John M. Kelly Library also houses the Library of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies which has over 100,000 volumes of work, along with slides and microfilm resources of mediaeval publications. The Library of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies is recognized as one of the best libraries of its kind in the world, and access to it is typically only for professors and graduate students requiring access to such material. The University of St. Michael’s College is affiliated with several prominent, specialized research centres which help to enhance the academic and educational experience of students as well as research in the areas important to the University. These institutes include the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute, Henri J.M. Nouwen Archive and Research Collection, Iacobucci Centre, Joesph Sable Centre for 19th Centruy French Studies, and USMC Archives. In 2005 the University will, for the first time in its history, experiment with de-segregation of the sexes in its on-campus residences; that is University houses will either be all male or all female but residents will share common amenities including dining and recreational facilities.
