The University of Alberta is one of Canada’s elite research-intensive institutions, and in 2003-2004 it received in excess of $377 million in external funding for its research activities making it the third highest recipient of external funding for research among all post-secondary schools in Canada. Among the University’s most prominent discoveries has been the first successful treatment for Type 1 diabetes. Currently, the University, in partnership with various businesses and government, is undertaking a $2.5 million project to study methods in which the negative environmental impacts of industrial activities can be reduced. In 2004, the University of Alberta expanded to Camrose, Alberta, about 90 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, when Augustana, a former university of the Lutheran Church founded in 1910, become its newest campus and faculty.

Over 200 undergraduate programs and more than 170 graduate programs, including in excess of 60 doctorates, in over 300 research areas spanning 15 faculties and schools are available at the University of Alberta. Many of the University’s individual departments offer certificates and diplomas of 1-2 years in duration. The Continuing Studies division of the University has many additional educational opportunities including courses and programs derived from the Arts, Business, Contract Training and Research Education, Health and Medicine, Languages, Open Studies, Political Science, and Science, as well as adult education and distance education options.
