Founded by Reverend Edmund Burke, St. Mary's University is Canada's oldest English-speaking Roman Catholic University. Today, SMU is the only university in the maritime region that has an astronomy program or a PhD program in Business Administration. The University's 'Sobey School of Business' is internationally renowned and is officially recognized by the prestigious The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). MacLean's Magazine recently ranked SMU number 1 in terms of having the most number of PhD-holding, full-time faculty members.

Academics: St. Mary's University |
St. Mary's University offers over 60 majors derived from the faculties of Arts, Commerce, and Science, including 17 graduate programs. SMU also offers 6 certificate programs in the faculty of Arts (Lingustics, Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Proficiency in French, German Language and Culture, and Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture) and a dual-certificate program in education which is earned at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and enables the graduate to teach in both Nova Scotia and Maine. The University also offers numerous co-op education options in Commerce and Science including opportunities to work internationally. In addiction, the University offers continuing education programs for the part-time and adult learner, ESL instuction for both native and non-native speakers, and pre-professional courses designed to help students in 18 professional programs.
