Students start with a foundation in surgery, and then take specialized courses in the anatomy and physiology of veins, arteries, lymphatic, and circulatory systems. Cell biology of the arterial walls, hemodynamics, and organ disfunction are also taught. Advanced courses include aneurysms of the aorta and other vessels, amputations, coagulation disorders, and biological and synthetic grafts and their complications.
Practical experience is gained in procedure such as the use of imaging equipment, ultrasound, how to perform intravascular stents, and varicose vein treatments.
Surgical techniques for embolic strokes, peripheral vascular disease, thrombosis, and femoral artery injuries are taught. Other common techniques taught include postoperative care procedures and wound management.
